KEEP THE EYES HEALTHY...

Our eyes are a precious commodity, and, as such, we need to take care of them the best ways we can. One of the most common problems is eye strain. Rest our eyes regularly during periods of close work. Read and follow these other tips in order to keep our eyes healthy and in good condition:
  • The most important thing we can do is to have our eyes checked regularly by a professional optometrist. In this context, we neet to be sure to tell our doctor about any differences we have noticed in our sight since our last visit. By having regular eye examinations, especially the dilated eye exam, various eye diseases such as myopia, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts can be detected in their early stages of development and treatment can begin in a timely manner. If we accidentally injure one or both of your eyes, or get a foreign object in one or both of them, seek professional assistance immediately.
  • Eat right! Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in our daily diet. Our body needs a variety of vitamins and minerals so it can keep our eyes and vision healthy and fine. There are also many supplements on the market today which claim to have beneficial medical effects on the eyes. One such supplement is bilberry. Bilberry fruit gets its claim to fame from World War II RAF pilots. The pilots swore that if they ate bilberry jam right before they went on a flying mission, it improved their night vision! True or not, bilberry can be found at our local health food store. This is not medically proven.
  • Pay special attention to the prescriptions our doctor or health care professional gives us and any effects that we may notice on our vision. Contact the physician right away if we suspect that a new prescription is causing any eye problems such as blurriness, etc. Never wait to see if the problems clear up on their own.
  • Wear safety glasses, even if we wear prescription glasses, at all times when we are working around the house doing tasks such as hammering, sawing, sanding, cutting, etc. Wear specially-designed goggles when welding, braising, etc. Wear safety glasses even when we are working with cement, mortar, paint, etc., to help keep splashes of chemicals out of our eyes.
  • Purchase an effective pair of non-prescription or prescription sunglasses. Always wear sun glasses when we are outside. Our eyes need protection from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. And never be fooled by cloudy days either as the rays are still being emitted from the sun.
